Game Writer at ByeSweetCarol. Reviews and Narrative Focused Articles
Elena Kovacs writes about games for ByeSweetCarol. Most of the time that means reviews, sometimes longer pieces when a game leaves her with more thoughts than expected. That happens occasionally. Not every game deserves a long article.
She tends to notice story structure very quickly. Sometimes within the first hour you can tell whether a narrative is building toward something interesting or just wandering around without a plan. Elena usually writes about that moment when the story either pulls you deeper into the game or starts losing its momentum.
Gameplay still matters of course. If controls feel awkward or mechanics start repeating themselves too quickly she will mention it. But story driven games are usually where her attention goes first.
On ByeSweetCarol she often writes about adventure games, RPGs, and smaller indie titles that try unusual narrative ideas.
Elena Kovacs was born in Budapest in 1994. Games were not a big part of her early childhood. There was one computer in the apartment that her father used for work. Eventually someone installed a few games on it and that was enough.
One of the earliest games she remembers clearly is The Longest Journey. She probably understood only part of the dialogue back then, but the atmosphere stayed in her mind for years.
During her teenage years she played a lot of story heavy games. Adventure titles, RPGs, narrative experiments that appeared in strange corners of the internet. Shooters were popular among friends but she never stuck with them for very long.
Later she studied Media and Cultural Studies at Eötvös Loránd University in Budapest. Her academic projects kept drifting toward interactive storytelling. Films and books were part of the coursework, but she kept comparing them with the way stories unfold in games.
Elena began writing about games while she was still studying. At first it was mostly personal blog posts about narrative design. Some were thoughtful. Others were probably too long and slightly messy.
Eventually she started contributing to smaller gaming sites that focused on indie developers and narrative heavy projects. Those places rarely had large audiences but they allowed more space to talk about storytelling without compressing everything into short summaries.
Her writing slowly shifted toward describing how a story actually unfolds while playing. Not just what the story is about, but when the pacing works, when it slows down, when a scene suddenly changes the entire tone of the game.
Before joining ByeSweetCarol she wrote reviews and essays for several smaller gaming websites that covered independent studios and experimental projects.
At ByeSweetCarol she works mainly on reviews and narrative focused articles. When a game relies heavily on story, she usually ends up writing about it.
Elena usually gravitates toward games where story and atmosphere matter. Titles where the player slowly uncovers the narrative instead of receiving everything immediately.

Pacing is something she pays attention to a lot. A story might be well written but still lose its impact if the game delivers it at the wrong moments.
Elena plays mostly on PC. That has been the main platform she uses for years. She still uses PlayStation occasionally when certain narrative games appear there first.
Some of the games she returns to repeatedly include Life Is Strange, Disco Elysium, Oxenfree, and The Longest Journey. They all handle storytelling differently, which is probably why they remain interesting even after several playthroughs.
She also spends time exploring smaller indie releases that experiment with narrative ideas. Many of them are rough around the edges. Every now and then though one of those projects does something unexpected and sticks in your memory.
Outside of writing she occasionally revisits older adventure games from the early 2000s. Some mechanics feel awkward now, but the stories still manage to hold attention surprisingly well.
All articles written by Elena Kovacs on ByeSweetCarol reflect her personal experience with the games discussed. She plays the games herself and writes based on that time spent playing. The opinions expressed in her articles belong to her as the person who experienced the game directly.
