From Auditions to a Leaked Trailer: Chet Falisek on Creating Left 4 Dead 2
Voice Acting and Casting
Casting for the survivors was a global effort, with the studio conducting about 100 auditions worldwide. The team established the characters’ concepts first and then began the search for actors to match those profiles.
Script Flexibility and Level Design
The script evolved during production as level designers proposed ideas and the development team chose which to incorporate. One illustrative change involved the mall mission: it initially revolved around finding a charge for an electric car, but designers later replaced that objective with searching for gasoline for a show car because it better served the survival logic and gameplay dynamics.
Age Rating Issues and Trailer Leak
Because of the game’s high level of violence and profanity, Valve was unable to obtain an age rating from the relevant agencies. To communicate the original concept to the community, the team intentionally “leaked” the first trailer. Falisek notes that some material shown in that reel was removed prior to the final release.
A Look at GTA 6
Falisek also weighed in on GTA 6, suggesting Rockstar faces a significant challenge in drawing players to GTA Online. He admits he cannot imagine what specific innovations the studio will deploy to genuinely surprise the audience.
The development of Left 4 Dead 2 illustrates how a team working in parallel across different areas can preserve the creative core of a project, even when that requires altering mechanics and cutting content.
