The remake of Final Fantasy IX, long a subject of rumor, is reportedly "on hold." Insider NateTheHate — who’s been right about several Nintendo scoops, incl. the Switch 2 — says the project currently shows no signs of life.

Square Enix labeling something "on hold" doesn't equal cancellation; it can mean work is paused, shelved, or just deprioritized. Right now, though, there’s no visible activity at the studio, so fans are left waiting (and worrying a bit).

This remake first surfaced in a large NVIDIA leak that also named Dragon’s Dogma 2 and Kingdom Hearts 4. From that list, FF9 (yes, FF9) is one of the last remaining items that hasn’t materialized.

No official game announcement exists, but Square Enix is still keeping the world of IX active: an animated series and a book prequel are in development. Not the same as a full remake, but it’s something to follow — esp. for those still hoping for the real thing.
