Nitroplus has announced that Gen Urobuchi's debut visual novel, Phantom of Inferno, will appear on Steam on September 4, 2026. The release, titled Phantom PHANTOM OF INFERNO NITRO ARCHIVE, reproduces the 2013 remake's content for Xbox 360 and PC and also incorporates elements from the 2009 anime Phantom: Requiem for the Phantom. Oddly enough, it doesn't feel like a mere rerelease — more like the same old story with its original edges sharpened.

First launched in 2000 for Japanese PC audiences, Phantom of Inferno is a neo-noir visual novel. A young Japanese tourist in the U.S. witnesses a killing by a covert group called Inferno, is kidnapped, and has his memory chemically and psychologically erased—i.e., drugs plus hypnotherapy force a blank slate. He's renamed "Zwei" and trained to be an assassin, working alongside Inferno's deadliest operative, Phantom. Zwei hones his craft, esp. under Phantom's guidance, while slowly uncovering the organization's plans. The tone can be bleak and intrusive; sometimes the story reads like a case study in lost identity rather than a straight thriller.
