Cory Barlog Leads Creative Direction of the God of War Franchise at Santa Monica Studio
Fans have been expecting another Barlog-led entry for a while. Then came the God of War Laufey announcement, and along with it a detail that changes how people should picture him: he's now head of the creative department at Santa Monica Studio, not the hands-on director for a single title.
He won't be the day-to-day lead on projects. Instead, Barlog pairs up with game directors — e.g., Ariel Lawrence, who heads development on Laufey — and sketches the franchise's long-range direction while leaving implementation to others.
“His responsibilities include working with project leaders and defining the overall vision for the series,” the studio confirmed on social media.
The shift has a history. The last time Barlog was the sole director was God of War (2018). By the time God of War Ragnarök came out in 2022 he was already sharing directing duties with Eric Williams. So: a gradual change, from running a single project's creative engine to guiding several teams and their narratives. Some fans will like that he’s shaping the forest instead of pruning individual trees; others might miss the more personal touch he used to bring.
