Epic Games rolled out an experimental update for Fortnite Creative that lets creators add AI-driven NPCs able to hold conversations and react to players. This change arrived in the Creative tools for Fortnite, and it’s already prompting people to experiment.
The capability is called the Conversations system (formerly the Persona device). It gives characters distinct voices and a sense of "personality" so they stop feeling like rote script-and-repeat props.
What it does: NPCs can carry unscripted dialogue. Within a single session they may remember events and adapt their replies (e.g., recalling a choice or reacting to a player’s behavior). They can also trigger in-game actions — handing out tasks or providing commentary, for instance — rather than just spouting fixed lines.
A catch: the feature lives in experimental mode only, and any projects that use it cannot be published yet. In short, you can play with it now, but you can’t ship it to the wider player base.
Epic has also put guardrails around usage. Creators are barred from using these AI characters for certain sensitive roles, i.e., providing medical or psychological advice, or simulating romantic relationships.
