The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time Remake Showed Its First Gameplay Trailer
Nintendo released the first gameplay trailer for its remake of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time yesterday, airing it as part of celebrations for the Zelda franchise’s 40th anniversary. The trailer follows Link as he walks through the opening village and approaches the Great Deku Tree, which in this title serves as the initial test of the player’s combat abilities.
The remake had been hinted at earlier with a very short teaser, a clip that left many wondering whether the game would be ready this year. Visually, Nintendo’s new version is a substantial upgrade from the 1998 original and has a look that some observers have compared to an unofficial remake previously made by a modder in Unreal Engine 5. Nintendo’s build is more polished, though not all longtime fans welcome the updated art direction, with some saying it strays artistically from the original.
According to Nintendo, the remake stays true to the original campaign: the story and locations remain the same, while the game runs in a new engine with revamped animations and refined gameplay. New mechanics highlighted in the trailer include a dedicated jump button and somewhat deeper combat. The remake also supports an input where players can hum a melody into their Nintendo Switch; if Link has already learned that tune in-game, he will play it on his ocarina.
GameSpot located additional gameplay material on the official site and edited it into a longer clip, extending the available footage by roughly six minutes. That compilation includes scenes with adult Link as well as snippets of dungeon exploration and puzzle-solving.
The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time releases on November 5 at a price of €60, and will be available exclusively for the Nintendo Switch 2 console.
