A desktop owner found that his PC was being used overnight — not by a stranger on the internet, but by his younger brother, who had been quietly streaming games from the machine for weeks.

The discovery came after the owner noticed the PC powered on each morning despite being put to sleep the night before and checked the Windows event logs. The logs showed wake events tied to Steam Remote Play activity. Months earlier the brother had received an old laptop as a gift, learned Steam Remote Play, logged into his elder sibling’s Steam account on the laptop, and spent roughly three weeks streaming games from the desktop into his own room. The remote player was exploring Cyberpunk 2077 (and once left Elden Ring running on the host), while all game rendering occurred on the desktop hardware; the laptop simply received a compressed video stream and sent input back.

Setting up Remote Play requires a one-time physical approach to the host to enter a four-digit pairing code. After that pairing, the Steam Link app can wake a sleeping PC over the local network via Wake-on-LAN, allowing the client to start a session without subsequent physical access. The owner noted the setup worked flawlessly for three weeks, which is notable given Remote Play’s poor reputation in its early days — people who tried it in 2019 remember blur, input lag, and audio problems — but it has since improved enough that some play across cities.

A few practical limits remain. A wired connection on at least one end and an unloaded router are key, since Remote Play’s traffic is processed sequentially and a dozen devices on the same network noticeably degrade the experience. The owner also observed that basic account and system protections would have closed the gap immediately: a password on the Steam account, locking the Windows session with Win+L, and enabling Steam two-factor authentication would have prevented the brother’s access.

The younger sibling, who is saving for his own PC, managed three weeks of undetected use — a streak the owner half-jokingly described as a promising start toward a future in system administration.
