Cinemas are gearing up for the premiere of "Spider-Man: New Day," and Tom Holland has been stoking interest with some loud claims. In an April chat with Esquire he said the new entry leans heavily into detective territory, even going so far as to call it the best film in the whole franchise — a bold take that might make longtime fans raise an eyebrow. According to him, the story is built around a sprawling puzzle that befuddles everyone, including the hero at first; the filmmakers apparently leaned into investigation and mystery to shake up the usual superhero rhythm.
“This one is basically a mystery — a lot of the time Spider-Man is as lost as anyone, thinking: ‘What is even going on?’. We’re trying to make it feel like a detective movie.”
The trailer keeps the main villain’s identity under tight wraps. The official logline describes the foe as an “incredibly strong enemy who remains completely invisible,” which only deepens the curiosity (i.e., we know very little). Holland also mentioned recent extra shoots: the team spent more time refining plot beats, tightening comic timing, and teasing out the villain’s profile so it doesn’t read as flat. From his tone, those reshoots seem to have been worth it — or at least he believes so.
You’ll get to judge the detective version of Spider-Man on the big screen starting July 31.
