Former Bungie dev Max Nichols pulled back the curtain on one of the most divisive moves in the life of Destiny 2: the so‑called "Content Vault." Fans exploded when content—paid campaigns and raids—started vanishing after the Beyond Light expansion.
The reason wasn’t whimsy. Bungie moved to a newer engine version that simply couldn’t run older assets, i.e., much of the legacy content became technically unusable. That forced teams to rebuild locations and missions almost from scratch if they wanted them back. Nichols calculated the workload, then helped recruit 20 new technical designers (20 ppl) to hit the porting deadlines. Still, the fallout was fierce. Many players labelled the whole episode catastrophic; paid storylines disappearing felt like a betrayal to some, and the community’s anger lingered long after the initial announcements.
