Modder mohtalgear released Definitive Subsistence, a fan-made overhaul for Metal Gear Solid 5 that restores the series’ older playstyle in which Snake begins missions with almost nothing and must acquire weapons and gear on-site.

Where earlier entries such as the original Metal Gear and the Metal Gear Solid trilogy started players with a very limited kit, Metal Gear Solid 5 moved away from that by letting Mother Base develop a wide assortment of weapons and equipment that can be taken into nearly any operation. Definitive Subsistence reverses that shift by reintroducing the On-Site Procurement (OSP) system first seen in the original Metal Gear Solid: basic weapons and tools are now available to find at mission locations, either lying on the map or taken from neutralized enemies.

Because the base game requires choosing loadouts before deployment, the mod also reworks the mission launch system to support scavenging during missions. The changes extend beyond firearms: radios placed around locations enable calling in support from companions — D-Dog, D-Horse, or Quiet — restoring a more improvisational approach to operations.

Definitive Subsistence also adds content that was previously unavailable in main missions, including new bionic arms and additional weapons, and it lets players roam the open world as Ocelot or Quiet. Players who prefer the modern MGSV model are not forced away from it: equipment developed at Mother Base remains accessible, so it’s still possible to start missions fully equipped if desired.
