Work on Far Cry 7 — known internally as Project Blackbird — has run into serious turbulence. Insiders talk about a large-scale reshuffle of teams and a rework of core mechanics; some have bluntly labeled the situation "production hell."

The studio abandoned plans for a release this year. The current internal target is 2027, though industry watchers say further slippage is plausible. The root of the trouble seems to be ambitious system changes: e.g., a hard time limit on finishing the main story (i.e., forcing a tighter narrative pace) and a substantial rethinking of the open-world design. Those kinds of shifts are not small tweaks — they require iteration, playtesting, and, often, reboots of earlier work.

At the same time, a separate effort called Project Maverick is reportedly underway — a multiplayer extraction-shooter set in Alaska. Ubisoft has not officially confirmed these reports; still, job posts, leaks, and other signals point toward a bet on a deeper mechanical reboot. Whether the extra time pays off or just prolongs the mess is TBD.
